Every so often somebody in slack will ask for advice on getting their first programming job. Experience is critical in the tech industry, so that first step can be a doozy.
While there is a lot of great information available on the internet, my favorite advice is short and sweet: Meetup and CodeWars
It’s who you know
Meetup is a great way to meet and network with people (and recruiters!) in your area, doing what you want to be doing. Even better, these people are often looking to hire, and it’s a great way to keep touch with the specific tech needs in your area. For example, you might (after having drinks w/ the lead developer) find out that the boutique web shop you’ve had your eye on is desperate for React developers. Added bonus: Frequently free pizza!
Practice makes Perfect
CodeWars is a great way to practice for the dreaded programming interview. Problems are available in a variety of languages and difficulty levels, and it’s really cool to see the way other programmers solve the same problem. Added bonus: Earning “internet points” can be addicting, so you can feel like you are achieving something…while you are actually achieving it. Enter the clan name “Coding Blocks” to link up with us!
