Alright, so I’m a bit late following up on this event. I’ll wait here while you go look at the speakers and envy me!
I had a fantastic time at the (hopefully annual!) Great Wide Open Conference. I got to see a lot of great presentations and meet a lot of interesting people.
Speaking of interesting people, it seemed like there was an awful lot of attendees from US government agencies and it was interesting to hear the kind of problems that they were dealing with.
OSS in government sounds like a no brainer to me:
- Easier to find qualified employees, less on-ramping
- Success not tied to a single vendor, no lock in
- Low cost / high quality
- Often large support ecosystem
But it turns out there are a LOT of complications, mainly around legally mandated licensing and liability requirements. Definitely sounds like things are headed in the right direction, and I’ll be interested to see how the conversation has evolved next year!
